About Group Work

Psychotherapeutic groups create a powerful crucible for individual and collective change. In the intimate setting of a small and safe group, historical and current relational issues emerge and present themselves for exploration and healing. The arts can amplify, expand and provide expression for strong or complex feelings which may be too difficult to form into words. Artwork can be presented and witnessed by trusted others; non-critical feedback can enhance our understanding of how we are seen and how we interrelate.
In the expressive arts groups that I facilitate, participants step through the doorway into the creative process. Working in imagery and making art together, they discover and develop links to feelings, patterns, beliefs and inner iconography. Within the safety of the group, difficulties and symptoms can find their way into poetry, dramatic enactments, movement or works of art using collage, drawing, sandtray or painting. The meanings of life challenges are explored as they are played out through the arts; insight and understanding grow. With trust in the creative process, group members strengthen intuitive pathways and find healing, community and hope. No art experience, training or special talent is necessary to use art in this way.
